A POSTDOCTORAL POSITION and TWO PHD STUDENTS POSITIONS in Computational Biochemistry is available in the group of Dr. Christo Z. Christov in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan. 


THE POSTDOCTORAL POSITION: 
The position is available for up to 2 years initially with possible extension upon available funding. The research project will be directed on understanding reaction mechanisms of transition metal-containing enzymes using mainly QM/MM, QM, but also MD and other molecular modelling methods will be applied. The main focus of the studies will be on transition metal-containing enzymes and in particular non-heme iron enzymes, but also on other enzymes. The simulations will be performed on the Michigan Tech High Performance Computing Facility Superior. The research will involve intensive collaborations with other research groups at Michigan Tech, other USA and EU Universities and companies.
The applicants should have a PhD and experience in the following areas: 
-	QM/MM methods for modelling enzyme mechanisms (for example using Amber, ONIOM, ChemShell, CHARMM, potential energy reaction path calculations, free energy reaction path calculations, transition state characterization etc.)
-	Transition metal-containing enzymes - electronic/geometric structure, reaction mechanisms
-	Electronic Structure Methods (e.g. DFT, ab initio, electronic correlation methods, excited state calculations)
-	Molecular Dynamics simulations, Free Energy Methods, Docking 
-	-Shell Scripting; some programming skills

THE PhD STUDENTS POSITIONS: 
The two PhD student positions are funded by the Department of Chemistry through allocations from the Graduate School as Graduate Teaching Assistants for up to 5 years with satisfactory progress to degree. Teaching undergraduate students is expected. The applicants should have at least a BSc degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar discipline. International applicants should demonstrate English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS tests scores. The research studies will involve intensive learning and gaining practical skills in Computational Chemistry/Biochemistry, High Performance Computing, Computer-Aided Drug Design, Bioinorganic Chemistry and some Programming The research topics will be focused on understanding enzyme reaction mechanisms, dynamics, spectroscopy and inhibition and utilizing this knowledge for design of enzyme inhibitors as novel more effective drug candidates. 

The studies will involve learning and applying of Multilevel Molecular Modelling Methods such as Combined Quantum Mechanical and Molecular Mechanics (QM/MM) methods, Molecular Dynamics (MD) studies, Electronic Structure Methods, Molecular Docking and Virtual Screening Methods. The main focus of the studies will be on transition metal-containing enzymes involved in epigenetic regulation (histone- and DNA-demethylases) but also on other enzymes (e.g. matrix metalloproteinases) and proteins (e.g, membrane transporters). The research will involve intensive collaborations with other research groups at Michigan Tech, other USA and EU Universities and pharmaceutical companies. 

The ideal applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications, experience and interests:  
-	BSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar discipline
-	Some background and/or strong motivation for research in computational chemistry, biomolecular modelling and drug design  
-	Some experience and/or strong interest for computational work, Linux, shell scripting, programming
