Queen's University Belfast
Research Fellow (Bioenergy)
Ref: 17/106060
School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Founded in 1845 as Queen's College Belfast, we became an independent university in 1908. Today, we're a member of the Russell Group, combining excellence in research and education with a student-centred ethos.

This post is available for 12 months to conduct pioneering research of the EPSRC funded project for investigating the mechanism and kinetics of fuels and chemicals production from biomass using Density Functional Theory (DFT).

The work will be carried out using Quantum Chemistry modelling programme such as Gaussian 16, CASTEP, Dmol3 and VASP. Computational resources are available for this project at QUB. Working within a project team across universities and the industrial partner, the post holder is expected to coordinate and conduct the tasks required relating to research and innovation, technology transfer, training and dissemination activities in the area of bioenergy especially on advanced fuel production.

Our five core values (Respect, Integrity, Excellence, Ambition, Connected) have been developed by staff and students.

They express our shared understanding of what we believe, how we aim to behave and what we aspire to be as an international organisation.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Have or about to obtain a PhD in Bioenergy, Chemistry, Computational Chemistry or related discipline.
  • A minimum of three years relevant research experience in:
    • Reaction mechanism and kinetic investigation of the biofuel production process (pyrolysis, gasification, combustion);
    • Computational chemistry experience using DFT, or related theory;
  • A good publication record in line with stage of career.
