It will happen wit= hin a week or two. This service is just no longer used, that is, it is no l= onger needed. Yet, operating this kind of service is a lot of work due to t= he overwhelming level of spam attempts and also exploits to attack the serv= er. On top of this, I am getting senile, and keeping up with these developm= ents becomes a burden. So, at some point (a week or two) the address chemistry-#-ccl.net = and corresponding Web pages to submit messages to the list, will no longer = distribute email to subscribers.

I will try to keep the CCL Web site= running for a bit longer, so if you need to grab something from there, you= still have a month or two. Also, since there are some unexpired position o= penings announcements ( https://server.ccl.net/jobs ), I need to run this site, as it wa= s my commitment. I plan to do some traveling later this summer and fall, an= d I will probably close the CCL Web site at this time. Leaving the server w= ithout monitoring is becoming a very risky proposition lately.

I wou= ld like to thank all CCL participants, for being with me. Some of you were = members of CCL Community for a long time. It makes me believe, that at some= point, it was a useful service, and it helped Computational Chemistry to g= ain more popularity.

Thank you for participating... It was a honor!=

Message-Id: <-55376-250709100938-29780-qq4Rs4kjzMf+Uy8MtHgamg * server.ccl.net> X-Original-From: "Tibor Gyori" Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2025 10:09:32 -0400 Sent to CCL by: "Tibor Gyori" [tibor.gyori/./chem.u-szeged.hu] Dear list, Despite not sending messages I have always seen the CCL as a prestigious forum and I am sad to see it go. I concur that the list archives are a historic artifact that would be worth preserving, if possible. Some of the messages (especially the older ones) are available from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, but I have no way of knowing how much is missing. Furthermore, the Internet Archive is unfortunately a lot more precarious than it may seem to be, as it is currently the target of several lawsuits by music and book publishers, which threaten to bankrupt the nonprofit organization maintaining it. > Simultaneously, I have noticed the volume of posts declining : it seems that the heyday is over in a way. Maybe because computational chemistry has become more robust, or maybe because it has moved on to other platforms? I think a major contributing factor is lack of awareness. A couple of years ago I mentioned the CCL to my supervisor who finished his PhD in 2007, back when CCL had way more activity, and he told me he wasn't subscribed. As for moving to other platforms, that is also certainly true. VASP, Psi4, MRCC, Orca all have their own discussion forums, some of which are very active, and I am sure there are many more fora. There is a chemistry StackExchange website, which caters to the Q&A format. Some people use(d to use) Twitter and Facebook. Also, an increasing fraction of discussions may be happening in languages other than English. I cannot recall the name or URL of the forum I saw, but I believe there are very active Chinese computational chemistry communities. Another platform that might also be gaining traction unfortunately, is Discord, especially among students. There are more than one reasons why it is an unfortunate platform, but the one I would highlight is that it creates non-public, unsearchable information silos. The messages and files posted to a Discord "servers" are only visible to people who register a Discord account and join the "server", which is only possible through invite links. (although those are often posted publicly) It is a platform clearly designed for ephemeral discussions and instant messaging, but it has (to a very large extent) replaced traditional web fora and mailing lists, along with Reddit, I guess. Thank you for keeping the CCL alive for so long. Best wishes, Tibor Gyri
