From dave@carbon.chem.csiro.au Wed Nov 11 19:05:50 1992 Date: Thu, 12 Nov 92 09:28:01 EST From: (Dr.) Dave Winkler Subject: Cambridge Crystallographic Database (CSD) To: chemistry@ccl.net Dear netters, There have been queries every now and then on how to contact the Cambridge Crystallogaphic Data Centre (CCDC), or whether telnet or FTP access is available. I am the Director of the Australian Affiliated Centre for the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and feel that some information may be timely. The database currently contains structures for approximately 100,000 small organic molecules. It is available in VAX/VMS, Silicon Graphics and machine independent formats. It requires 220-300MB depending on the platform. Graphical searching software is included. It is also distributed in forms suitable for direct searching by MACCS/3D and SYBYL Unity database programs. Each country has an Affiliated Centre who is responsible for distributing the database and collecting the money (yes it is not free!). The cost to subscribe depends on how much each centre is charged by CCDC and how many subscribers there are. In a country like Australia where there are relatively few subscribers, it works out reasonably expensive, about AU$1000 (US$700) per year (2 updates). I'm not aware of any FTP sites where the database can be accessed and, because of the cost recovery involved, it is unlikely there will be one (does the US Affiliated Centre want to comment?). In Australia we have telnet access on the AARNet (Internet) for registered subscribers. There is probably a similar set up available in the US. For more information the following contact numbers and addresses may help:- Cambridge Crystallograpghic Data Centre 12 Union Road Cambridge CB2 1EZ U.K. Phone 44 223 336408 Fax 44 223 336033 Email SOFTWARE@CHEMCRYS.CAM.AC.UK The contact person is Stephanie Hull.
