This doesn't work in my hands! The problem is that while the Mac can
READ the directory on the PC floppy, it can do very little with it. It
can read and write plain ASCII files, but that's about it unless you add
some software.

Two options that work for me:

1. If you have a network connection between the Mac and PC, a binary
FTP works. In either direction, Word recognizes the other format and
automatically converts, including formatting, styles, etc. Watch out
for a Word 6/Word 5 mismatch.
Again, Apple File Exchange, by itself, does NOT work here!

2. Get a translator. I use DataViz MacLink Plus/PC Connect. This
package may have more than you need but does give you:
    a. Apple Mac PC Exchange so PC disks appear on your desktop like
Mac disks. A much easier way to look at the contents of the
        disk.
    b. MacLinkPlus translator library (handles PC<->Mac Word and a LOT
        more).
    c. Apple Mac Easy Open makes translation more transparent.
    d. PC Connect also gives you PC<->Mac serial file transfer.
I guess you probably only really need PC Exchange; this is a more
general solution.

Hope this helps.

Hallo cyberchemists,
Please forgive me for a stupid question I post here. I have a
little debate with my friends here about a critically important word.
Which one is correct, "Molecular Modeling" and "Molecular Modelling".
I was taught in school to use double "l" but I have been in doubt
since my textbooks and papers all around me use only one "l".
Forgive my English too. It's not my mother tongue.
                                                        sincerely,
                                                        Noy

Take your pick. Either is correct. I believe that the "ll" variant
is British. In my mind, the single l version is to be preferred,
because it wastes less bandwidth ;-).

Has anyone had any experience with X windowe software on the new Power PC
(Macs). Previously the two choices were Mac-X and eXodus. If you have
had experience, what software have you used and how has it worked?

P.S. I want to use the software to access both Spartan and MacroModel on
an SGI platform.

I tested my earlier suggestion about using a QUADRA or IIci. It works
fine. Here is what you do:

(a) If you have WORD for windows then save the file in the MS Word 5.x
(Mac) format. (b) don't attempt to open this file from a Mac by clicking
on it twice; The best way is to open WORD and then give the
appropriate/path and filename. As long as your Mac can read PC disks
this method works fine. MacLink Plus Translator is another way to go,
but, depending on the version you have, suffers from mistranslated
non-ASCII characters.

Both spellings are correct. The American version uses one "l" while the
British/European counterpart uses two l's. This is not the only word
where such differences exist - Aluminum (U.S.) vs Aluminium is another.
Recently the Royal Society of Chemistry has changed the way "Sulphur"
used to be spelt. The new spelling adheres to the American standard
"Sulfur". When you are in doubt, take a look at journals which are
published in the U.S. and Europe.

If you look at Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary of the
English Language, you will see that either the form 'modelled' or
'modeled' is acceptable. The same applies to 'tunneled' and 'tunnelled',
another common source of confusion in theoretical chemistry. One
may assume that the same criteria apply to modelling/modeling and
tunneling/tunnelling?

I guess it's more important to be self-consistent !
