Subject: <STRONG>24.06.07 Postdoctoral Position at the University of Toronto, Canada: Quantum Computing for Chemistry Applications</STRONG><br />

<pre>A postdoctoral position in quantum computing for chemistry is available starting immediately: 
Early-stage quantum computers are now available for actual use. While a practical advantage 
of using a quantum computer (instead of a classical computer) has not been realized yet, it is 
very likely that such an advantage will be realized in the future in the field of chemistry, a field
that is intrinsically governed by quantum mechanics and that lives with the challenge that the 
Schroedinger equation cannot be efficiently solved with classical computers. We are currently 
exploring the use of quantum computers for chemistry problems, see, for example Physical 
Chemistry - Chemical Physics 2024, 26, 4071-4082: 'Applications of noisy quantum computing 
and quantum error mitigation to adamantaneland: A benchmarking study for quantum chemistry' 
(reprint available on request). Future work will explore the potential of distributed computing. 
Any candidate should have the following qualifications: good experience in coding/programming; 
ideally in Python with some experience in shell scripting, but strong background in other computer 
languages is OK. Good background and intense interest in chemistry and/or physics. The ability to 
learn fast, work with others and to communicate in English. Previous experience with quantum 
computing languages (IBM Qiskit or Xanadu PennyLane) is an advantage but not required. Your 
degree could be in chemistry, computer science, physics, or in related fields. If you do not have
published papers in the field of quantum computing, you would need to explain in your cover
letter why you think you are qualified. Note that the work involves *quantum computers*,
which goes beyond quantum chemistry on classical computers. Experience with quantum
chemistry on classical computers (Gaussian, GAMESS, etc.) is good but not sufficient.


The position will be initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.</pre>
