Title:
REVOLUTION OF THE CHEMICAL JOURNAL
Abstract:
REVOLUTION OF THE CHEMICAL JOURNAL, Steven M. Bachrach and Stephen R. Heller, Department of Chemistry, Northern
Illinois University, DeKalb, IL 60115 and USDA, ARS, Bldg. 005, Room 337,
Beltsville, MD 20705-2350
Global communication using the Internet now affords the technology to radically
alter the state of the chemistry journal. Instead of presenting just static data and
images, full spectra, molecular coordinates, 3-dimensional representations of
instrumentation, even raw data can be included within articles for manipulation
by the reader. Video and audio clips can be seamlessly incorporated into documents.
Perhaps even more remarkable is the ability of the reader to customize the
look and operation of the journal. Publication times will be reduced since
reviews will be processed by email rather then through the postal system and
articles will appear as they are accepted, instead of the delay until an issue
date is reached. These features will be discussed within the framework of the
Internet Journal of Chemistry.
