All, I had no idea that my original question would generate all this discussion on fortran vs C/C++ and other languages... :-) The solution to my original quandry reflects some of the discussion. My colleague prefers C++ while I only usually program in fortran, and can hack a little in C. So to make things more efficient for both sides I stripped down my the most critical part of the fortran code to it's barest essentials to make the flow as obvious as possible, and thus to make the rewrite in C++ as easy and straight forward as possible for my colleague. Mission accomplished.
