Are you compiling the stand-alone VB2000 or VB2000 in GAMESS(US) or VB2000 in Gaussian. I have never used MacOS X, but we have been told it works. I might be able to get access to test what you tried. g77 is rather out of date, and we have not used it for a while, so the problem might be a general one. Can you use gfortran?
