June 1-3, 2019, Shanghai, China Quantum mechanical effects, e.g., zero-point energy, tunneling, delocalization of nuclei, and quantization of molecular degrees of freedom, play a crucial role in chemical and biological systems. This is becoming increasingly recognized owing to recent theoretical developments that have greatly expanded the size and complexity of systems amenable to rigorous quantum treatment, and new experimental methods capable of probing the fingerprints of quantum effects with unprecedented spatial, energy, and temporal resolution. The influence of quantum mechanics is ubiquitous and far reaching, both in the gas phase and condensed matter, governing the electronic structure, and thereby potential energy surfaces, of a system, as well as the distribution and dynamics of nuclei, with biological relevance in enzyme reactions, and technological importance in energy conversion and storage materials, among many other examples. The primary goal of the International Symposium on Quantum Effects in Chemistry and Biology is to provide a platform for scientific exchange and collaboration between leading international scholars working on the frontiers of this vibrant and rapidly evolving field, and thus help advance cutting-edge research in an emerging scientific area that critically impacts society. The symposium will also provide an excellent learning experience for attending young scholars and graduate students.
