Subject: 25.02.24 PhD Student position in Computational Bioinorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Technological University
A position for a PhD Student in Computational Bioinorganic Chemistry would
be available in the group of Prof. Christo Z. Christov in the Department of
Chemistry at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI.

The research studies will involve intensive learning and gaining practical
skills in Computational Chemistry and Biochemistry. The research topics
will be focused on understanding transition metal containing enzymes
involved in gene regulation - reaction mechanisms, dynamics and ligand
binding in reference to experimental structural, spectroscopic and
biochemical studies. The studies might involve also method
development/machine learning applications.

The project will involve learning and applying of Multilevel Molecular
Modelling Methods such as Combined Quantum Mechanical and Molecular
Mechanics (QM/MM) methods, Quantum Mechanics (QM) and Molecular Dynamics
(MD) studies. The main focus of the studies will be on transition
metal-containing enzymes involved in epigenetic regulation (histone- and
DNA-demethylases) as well as the ethylene-forming enzyme and other
iron-containing enzymes.

The ideal applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications,
experience and interests:
-	BSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar discipline

-	A background and/or strong motivation for research in computational
chemistry, biomolecular modelling and drug design with focus on enzyme
        mechanisms and dynamics

-	Experience and/or strong interest for computational work, Linux, shell
        scripting, machine learning

The position would be funded by the Department of Chemistry through
allocations from the Graduate School as Graduate Teaching Assistants for up
to 5 years with satisfactory progress to degree. Teaching undergraduate
students is expected. The applicants should have at least a BSc degree in
Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar discipline. International applicants
should demonstrate English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS tests scores.
More details about the application procedures can be found at:
http://www.mtu.edu/chemistry/graduate/program/.

The start date should be no later than August, 2025.
The interested applicants should contact Dr. Christov ASAP by e-mail on
christov^mtu.edu and send a current CV with a brief description of research
interests and experience.
