Abstract: CHEMICAL COMMUNITIES AS A VEHICLE FOR DISSEMINATING SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION. William G. Town and Ian Tarr, ChemWeb, Inc., 34-42 Cleveland Street, London W1P 6LB, England. The development of chemical communities on the World Wide Web is changing the ways in which chemists perform their work and communicate the results of their work to their colleagues. Chemists tend to think and communicate with chemical structures, so it is vital that the new tools and electronic resources being made available on the Web incorporate graphical structure representations which are 'live' molecules - not just scanned 2D structure images. The Web is encouraging new models of scientific publication, including continuous publication, which make articles available immediately for discussion by their peers. Authors can now append data, include live structures and generally present information in a more timely and complete way. Recent developments of web-based chemical communities will be described and preliminary conclusions drawn about their impact on the future of scientific communication.
